Last Month the National Lottery granted Lambeth council  £241k to draw up detailed plans to improve our historic cemetery. The improvement plans include new entrance gates, footpaths, drainage & improvements to the Greek Orthodox Necropolis. A Visitor Centre is a real possibility too. Once these plans pass the next stage the Heritage Lottery Fund will grant us £4.8m to implement the plans.

West Norwood’s cemetery is one of London’s historic Magnificent Seven cemeteries founded in 1836 and even has its own catacombs.

Friends of West Norwood Cemetery ( http://www.fownc.org/) organise free tours on the first Sunday of the month – meet inside main gates at 2.30pm. Donations appreciated!

AN URGENT APPEAL – LOST URN WITH ASHES

Hello, I am not a local of West Norwood but 2 years ago, after my father passed away, we chose West Norwood Columbarium within the Cemetery to place his ashes. Ever since we have got to know West Norwood and have only been impressed by the kindness of people we have met in passing.

Unfortunately some time between last Friday 14th Feb and  Tuesday 18th Feb when we discovered the incident, my father’s urn containing his ashes were stolen from the Columbarium.

We are in a state of absolute distress and would like to ask if anyone has seen  a beige/cream/pale green mottled round marble urn that is quite heavy, about 25cms tall and has gold leaf chinese writing down the front. We hope that the urn remains sealed but if not the contents are in a red bag that we pray are untouched or undamaged. The urn is not one that is usually found or seen in the UK so would be easily identifiable.

We would be eternally grateful if any sightings of my father’s urn can be reported to us  -via WestNorwoodNews, leave a reply in the comment box below.

Angela.

West Norwood Cinema-Library update

Cllr Jane Pickard at the Nettlefold Halls building

Cllr Jane Pickard at the Nettlefold Halls building

Detailed plans for the a joint public library and City Screen cinema in the Nettlefold Halls building at 1 Norwood High Street SE27 9JX are progressing and are expected to be available for public consultation at the end of this summer. This will allow the views of local people to be incorporated into the plans before the planning application is submitted in the autumn. A decision on the planning application could be made by the end  of the 2013 and then construction work , lasting from between 12 to 18 months, would start early  in 2014.

The squatters occupying the Nettlefold Halls have been evicted.

Friends of West Norwood Library and Friends of West Norwood Cemetery, other local community  representatives, local businesses and councillors are working with the council and City Screen on the plans. The library will have the same amount (or possibly more)  floorspace than the previous service in the Nettlefold Halls. The plans will also allow for a Vistor Centre for the cemetery – once funding is obtained for this project  – perhaps with a national Heritage Lottery Fund grant.

In the meantime a temporary library service continues to run from the Old Library at 16 Knights Hill SE27 0HY  opening daily at 10am  (except Sundays & Tuesdays when the library is closed)

For more details on the library-cinema plans for West Norwood  – see the council cabinet report on 10th June 2013:
