All weather pitch in Norwood Park

Cllr Pickard on the tarmac pitch

Cllr Pickard on the tarmac pitch

The council and the Football Foundation have plans to jointly invest over £350k in Norwood Park – by updating the tarmac pitch  by Elder Rd SE27 9ND.   The pitch will be astroturfed for all weather football as one 9-aside, two 7 aside or three 5-aside pitches and have new floodlighting so it can be used 8am  to 10pm. There will be a locked container at the side of the pitch for equipment.

A planning application has  just been submitted (ref  16/01130) for formal consultation.  To see the details and comments  go on-line :  http://www.lambeth.gov.uk/planning-and-building-control/planning-applications/search-planning-applications.

Management of the pitch will pass to Norwood School who need the extra pitches for their pupils during the school day . Community sports clubs will book the pitches for weekends and evenings.  There will some time slots for commercial lettings . This means the pitch will have enough income to  cover the costs of  maintaining the pitch & facilities in good condition. The pitch changing rooms & toilets will be in the school.

This pitch is  the only sizeable level space in Norwood Park and local councillors want to see some free community access to for local people . The plan is for  community use on weekdays 8am to 9am and 5pm to 6pm. A group of local people & pitch users will be set up to help manage the lettings  with the school.

There has been consultation with Friends of Norwood Park, community groups and future users of the pitch . See our earlier posts:  27/5/15 and 4/10/15

Upgrade Norwood Park ball court

The council is working in partnership with the Football  Association to enlarge and astroturf the ball court in Norwood Park close to Elder Road. The detailed plans costing £430,000 can be seen at a public consultation event in West Norwood Health & Leisure Centre , Devane Way SE27 0DF  on Monday 26th October from 6.30pm .

Football clubs will pay to use the new ball court marked out as one 9 a-side, two 7 a-side and three 5 a-side football pitches. The site will include a storage container for equipment. The new pitches are to act as a hub for sports organisations to run community football club sessions for: 8-12 year olds, 12 years upwards, women and girls , disabled people, young unemployed,  football coaching qualifications and space for the Brixton Bulls Rugby club.IMG_20151003_135433660

Regular sessions will be timetabled  for  free drop-in access by the local community.

BMX flatland riders call the ball court  The Green Mile (TGM)  and object to replacing the tarmac surface with astroturf. See comments on our previous blog dated 27th May 2015. Discussions are taking place with The Norwood School to find the riders an alternative venue .

Astroturf for Norwood Park

Ball court Norwood Park

Ball court Norwood Park

The tarmac ball court in Norwood Park , by Elder Road, is due to get an upgrade to astroturf. An artificial grass surface means the ball court can be used as a pitch for competitive junior and adult football matches and training for other sports.

The council has set aside £150k to invest in sport facilities in Norwood Park. Following talks with the Football Association, Friends of Norwood Park, The Norwood School and local community sports clubs there are 2 alternative options. One option is for a junior sized pitch 97.4m x 52m and the other for a full sized pitch 106m x 70m.

A meeting on  Monday 1st June at 6:30pm at Norwood School, Crown Dale SE19 3NY will review the 2 options. Come along to find out more about the project.
