Streatham’s historic Tate Library, originally opened in 1890, is about to undergo a major facelift. This means the library on Streatham High Road will close on Sunday August 11th. Temporary library facilities will be available at 2 Gracefield Gardens SW16 2ST from Monday 19th August 2013, with the same opening hours, until the newly refurbished library opens in March 2014.

The £1.2 m repair and refurbishment work is being financed by Lambeth council and the Mayor of London’s Outer London Fund. This investment will result in the restoration of this wonderful heritage building to its former glory, revealing superb historic features and updating access to the building and improving the interior with new fittings and library stock. The Tudor Hall will become a cultural community space and there will be a new main entrance to the Library and this cultural space on Pinfold Road. Community meeting rooms will be available on the first floor.

There has been extensive public consultation on the plans which have been broadly welcomed by local people, including the Friends of Streatham Library.

Councillor Sally Prentice, Cabinet Member for culture said: “Streatham library is much loved and well supported but has been in need of repairs and refurbishment for some time. It is wonderful that work is about to begin that will ensure the future of this important and historic building for Streatham residents for many years to come.”

While in its temporary home at 2 Gracefield Gardens the library opening hours will remain the same : 1pm to 8pm Mondays, 10am to 8pm Tuesdays & Wednesdays, 10am to 6pm Thursdays & Fridays, 9am to 5 pm Saturdays, 12noon to 5pm Sundays.
