STOP PRESS: Swimming Pool Gets the Go Ahead

West Norwood’s Health and Leisure Centre with swimming pool, gym and dance studio gets the final go ahead. Construction work on the centre will start in the next few weeks and will be complete within two years.

The joint health and leisure centre will be built on land near the derelict Norwood Hall at the end of Devane Way facing West Norwood train station. This major investment by Labour run Lambeth Council is a huge boost to West Norwood and will encourage further private investment in the borough as well as provide much needed new facilities.

Progress on Swimming Pool

Derelict Norwood Hall

Derelict Norwood Hall

West Norwood’s 25m swimming pool, 100 station gym, dance studio & health centre passed another hurdle this week. The NHS has agreed Lambeth council’s final plans and now it is just up to the government to give the final go ahead. The new centre is to be built close to the derelict Norwood Hall on Devane Way opposite West Norwood Rail station.

The £14.2m project includes  £20,000 for public art. Let us know your ideas for a painting or  sculpture to complement this great new resource for West Norwood ( email jmeldrum@lambeth.gov.uk)

New Pool gets closer

Swimming PoolPlans for a health and leisure centre with a 100 station gym , dance studio & 25m swimming pool in West Norwood  are now awaiting the last  stages of approval by the NHS and Government.

Lambeth council and NHS Lambeth have  agreed  their final detailed proposals  for the centre, on the green opposite West Norwood train station. The plans are now with NHS London and  civil servants, firstly at  the Department for Communities and Local Government – which has already approved the funding in principle, and then at  The  Treasury.

Once agreed, building work could start in the summer 2012.

New hurdle for leisure & health centre

Japanese Knotweed

Japanese Knotweed

Work should be completed in the next 2 months on  the final details of the plans for the new leisure centre and  health centre for West Norwood on land  at the end of Devane Way off Knights Hill opposite West Norwood station. The new government has confirmed its support earlier this year for the funding but the Treasury has just added another step to check the project.

It is hoped that this new hurdle  will not add any significant delays so construction work can start early in 2012.  Work is already in underway to tackle the Japanese knotweed on the site as this weed can grown through concrete! (Building work will be starting on the nearby new primary school in October.)

Cutting council budgets

Lambeth Council must make £42 million in savings by April 2012 and £79 million by April 2014. This means that for every pound the council currently spends there will be only 87p next year and 75p in three years time. To contribute to the discussion on the budget setting for the next 3 years why not have have a go at the budget simulator on the council web site:
